What to Know Before & After Your Anesthesia Appointment

Your Guide to a Smooth Sedation Experience

Whether you’re receiving sedation for anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, or complex treatment, our team ensures a safe, comfortable experience before, during, and after your procedure.

Our board-certified anesthesiologists use advanced equipment and protocols to monitor you closely every step of the way. Please review the pre- and post-anesthesia instructions on this page to help your visit go as smoothly as possible.

Before Your Appointment

  • Inform your dentist and anesthesiologist about your medical history, medications, and allergies
  • Share any history of adverse reactions to anesthesia
  • Arrange a responsible adult to drive you home (non-negotiable)
  • No food or drink—nothing by mouth unless otherwise directed
  • Exception: Small sips of water are required for the medications (as directed)
  • Take only approved medications with a sip of water
  • Avoid blood thinners, herbal supplements, or medications the team hasn’t cleared
  • Loose, comfortable clothing with short sleeves
  • Avoid makeup, nail polish, perfumes, and jewelry
  • Bring a valid photo ID, insurance information, and a list of medications
  • Arrive at the dental office at your scheduled check-in time
  • Review final consent forms and undergo a brief health screening
  • Final check with the anesthesiologist to answer any questions
  • If you’re feeling unwell (fever, cold, sore throat, etc.), call to reschedule
  • If you’re unsure about anything, don’t guess, call us
  • Your safety is our number one priority. These instructions are not suggestions—they’re the game plan

After Your Appointment

  • Drowsiness or grogginess (can last several hours)
  • Impaired memory or coordination
  • Dry mouth or mild nausea
  • Emotional sensitivity
  • Rest quietly at home
  • Have a responsible adult stay with you
  • Drink water and eat light, soft foods as tolerated
  • Take medications as prescribed
  • Call the office with any concerns
  • Do not drive or operate machinery
  • Do not drink alcohol or smoke
  • Drowsiness: Plan to take a few naps after surgery
  • Nausea: Drink small sips of water or Ginger Ale and avoid heavy meals
  • Bruising/swelling at IV site: Apply a cold compress and monitor for redness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting that doesn’t stop
  • Severe pain, swelling, or bleeding
  • Fever or chills
  • Confusion or trouble waking up fully
  • IV site looks infected (red, warm, pus)
